The Jump by Dennis Stabile

It was a typical weekend with the boys from Warren, MI. We were out looking for beer and women and having the times of our lives, little did we know that this night would become legendary to all who were there and all friends who quickly learned of it.

Jimmy D was driving the T.D.C. cutlass (two door coupe) Monty and Johnny O were with him in the front, Bruce, Joe and myself were all in the back seat. At the end of curry street was a party store that we frequently went to trying to get someone to buy us beer which we were unsuccessful most of the time but tonight we scored. Pulling out of the parking lot we headed down curry street happy and ready for the exciting night ahead. As we continued down curry street someone shouted hey, Did you hear Curry jump has been fixed ? That was all Jimmy D needed to hear to mash the pedal to the floor on the TDC which resulted in a roar from us shouting, laughing and clapping , but laughter quickly turned to mumbling then to silence as the cool one Jimmy D (having a beer in one hand and the other on the steering wheel) wasnt letting up40...50.60...miles per hr. oh crap, he obviously didnt get that the comment about the jump being fixed was a joke but its not like we all had time to say hey, Jim we were all noticing your not letting up on the dear old pedal lad, and that jump over there yonder is still sitting like it always has waiting to flip some stupid kids having fun so why dont you do us all a favor and just lift that right foot off the pedal a little in fact how about completely off the pedal will do and then hit the brake as we hit the jump I glance over and read the speedo at a nice 77 frickin miles per hr. from here on it out, everything was slowww motion. As I thought to myself Cedar Point you aint got shit on us right now I noticed Jimmy still holding his beer, slouched back in the seat and one hand on the steering wheel, as I was glancing to my left I see Bruce who was at this point above me and his back was flush with the headliner (someone must have forgot to tell him to hold on to his beer cause that was next to him floating and spinning in mid air) as I looked forward out the windshield noticing the birds and planes and the tops of houseslol, (no seriously if felt like we were that high cause all I could see was sky). As we landed or should I say bottomed out the first time we all noticed a VW bus parked to the left of us as we hit Jimmy cut the wheel missing the VW bus but the car had gained air again after the suspension basically collapsed and recoiled back it sent up in the air again we headed for a tree which Jimmy somehow cut the wheel missed that one also then cut the wheel again to avoid a mail box then as we coasted down the street to the end never hitting the breaks once you could hear a pin drop in the T.D.C as we finally stopped everyone just sat there for like 5 seconds without saying a word, then everyone jumped out of the car and began doing their own thank you God speeches, Monty kissed the ground, Bruce laid on the lawn, Joe and Johnny were laughing, I went behind a bush to get rid of my underwear which was holding what resembled a 5 lbs bag of elephant dung. All the time Jimmy never seemed to have moved from the captains chair still sipping on his beer in the same position he was when we hit the jump all he kept saying was what are all you Pus@*! worried about I had everything under control.

Somehow we made it back to Johnny's house that night, finished drinking and everyone recalled what happened this night, knowing this is one of those times of ours that was going to be legendary.
